Boat trip on Tuesday 16 August 2022
We arranged to meet at 9.30 am sharp in the Eden bus station in High Wycombe. The guests and friends turned out in force.
N had to negotiate tickets for 16 passengers ,of various ages for 20 passengers. ( we were meeting further guests directly at Marlow),eventually a raft of family/ group tickets did the trick. The bus driver was relieved when we all boarded and help pack out the rest 800 service to Reading.
We took in the beautiful view of some very expensive looking shops as we descended down Marlow High Street on our way to Higginson Park .
We got to the river side well in time and were joined by the other guests now we totalled 20.
The steamer was set for sail at 11 o’clock ,but as we know things never go to plan !!
A sign was stuck to the ramp leading up to the boat ,explaining “No boat trips today ,Boat arranged for private hire”.
What to do?
So a few of the steering committee of the group suggested using “The little green boat company ” about 100 yards away.
Great idea, hastily 2 boats were hired for an hour each with 8 people in each boat.
This worked out fine as a few were happy to rest on the river bank ,looking after the picnic and to take some further pictures.
2 sailors were volunteered from our members and became the drivers.
J and S were happy to oblige.
The boat took off to an almighty cheer, of course it had to start raining at that precise time and the 4 non passengers went running for cover under the oak trees , complete with picnic hampers and assortment of bags and clothes. The canopy was indeed a good one.
All the sailors were happy on their return with tales from the riverbank and more.
We enjoyed the fantastic food ,rolls, eggs cheese ,chocolate crisps and cake ,went down a treat.
N decided to treat everybody to Ice cream from the residential Mr Softy van.
We happily returned to High Wycombe via a slight bus delay and furious downpour.
A great trip was enjoyed by all, and we can’t wait to sail again.
