| Part One : Old Bertie I recalled an event which happened on the ferry crossing to the Isle of Wight a couple of years ago. It was a beautiful October afternoon ‘ a fantastic month for reflection’ my mother had pointed out to me in my youth. The wife and I went to the upper deck to take in the view and Solent air. Families were pointing out various spots to each other, foreign tourist snapped away on expensive looking cameras and latest technology Camcorders . We sat 4 benches deep, eating our especially prepared packed lunch , when a gentleman approached me and introduced himself. I’m Bertie from the beautiful Island , he proudly announced. He was in his sixties , a face that was well worn, weather beaten but alert, his clothing were that worn by fisherman, strong practical. He had a straw-hat with blonde hair sticking out (a bit like Wurzel Gummidge) I laughed to know on in particular . His shoes were leather of the best quality with Blakey’s on the soles. I used to do a bit a tap dancing , back yonder , he recalled , he did a little jig to some imaginary music he made up. ‘Anyway’. he suddenly stopped mid dance . ‘ It’s gonna be a bit chilly tonight’. ‘You boy needs a scarf , don’t he missus ? he said to the wife and myself. ‘I’m not sure ‘ I politely replied. ‘No no my son , take this scarf and don’t argue with old Bertie’. He wrapped it deftly around my exposed neck. ‘I suppose it is a bit chilly ‘ I conceded. Unbelievably Old Bertie had already left, I searched amongst the eager passengers for a glimpse of my shining knight , he was not to be seen or heard of again.
